Songkran Miyomsane Forensic Medicine Museum
If you are looking for something different to do, a trip around the Songkran Miyomsane Forensic Medicine Museum will probably fit the bill. Located behind Siriraj Hospital it is a collection of skeletons and remains from criminal cases and forensic experiments. On show are a number of hemorrhaged brains, severed arms limbs, and various parts of the body displaying stab wounds! The founder of the institute left his body to the museum so students could study him. As soon as you walk into the building you see his skeleton hanging over the entrance.
Probably the museum’s most famous exhibit is the preserved body of See Uey Sae Ung ‘See Ouey’. See Ouey is famed in Thailand as a serial killer who preyed on young children and ate their remains. A generation of Thai youth was encouraged into bed at appropriate hours with comments such as ‘If you don’t go to be now, Si Ouey will get you!’ There is now a full-length film featuring Si Ouey and his final capture in the 1950s.
It’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea to look at skulls with bullet holes at various angles which were used to study the impact of bullets on the brain. Although pretty gruesome, the museum manages to attract well over 100 visitors a day.
Details: the museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00-17:00. Admission is free.
