After a bit of waiting for official word, June 13-14 2008 have been confirmed as the dates of this year’s Hua Hin Jazz Festival – and it looks like it’s going to be a good one. The line up at the royal resort town of Hua Hin (only a couple of hours drive from Bangkok) includes the usual mix of international and local talent. With a single stage this year, expect big crowds! Following on after the success of last year’s event – featuring the likes of Bill Bruford's Earthworks – this year sees the Kenny Garrett Quartet grace the event as Friday’s main act.
What’s for dessert? Well, on Saturday Dave Weckl on drums (some of the megastars he’s worked with include George Benson, Diana Ross, and Robert Plant) as part of Mike Stern’s Band alongside legendary bassist Chris Minh Doky. Local talent includes (Friday) Silpakorn Kickin Ass Quintet, The Hua Hin Music All Stars Band, Mansri Band featuring Kop Songsit and Jean from Thai TV’s Academy Fantasia and, of course, the irrepressible T-Bone – not really a Jazz band but massive fun nonetheless with their local brand of ska reggie. Saturday sees the Young Blood Band tribute Billie Holiday, the Jazz Dojo, The Pomelo Town and Denny and Friends.
Of course, the real stars of the event will be the location – and the food! World class Jazz, on a beach, eating world class Thai seafood – is this heaven? The event's single stage will be located near Sofitel Central, Hua Hin and the event is free.
