The Royal Barge Procession to Present the Royal Kathin Ceremony

The tradition of Royal Barge has become a "Thai cultural heritage" created and passed down to us by our ancestors. It is unlikely that any other nations in the world could match it. Royal Barges are especially treasured as the national pride of supreme craftsmanship of the traditional Thai arts. The exquisitely detailed work displayed by the royal barges represents the artistic endeavor of artists from several areas such as naval architects, pattern designers, carvers and painters, etc.

The Royal Barge Procession is the world-class heritage that will appear once agian on the occasion of the royal ceremony to present the Royal Kathin robes to the monks at Wat Arun Ratchaworaram Ratchaworamahawihan on Friday, 9 November,2012. On the Celebration on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary, 5 December 2011. This is a demonstration of the might of Thai King and immensity of the Royal Barge Procession that graces our nation now and forever.

The water-borne Royal Kathin Procession will consist of a flotilla of 52 traditional style barges arranged in 5 columns, based on a battle formation from ancient times. This is made up of four major royal barges Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban H.M.King Rama IX, Anantanakkharat and Anekkachatphuchong, 8 barges with animal figureheads and 36 smaller vessels. The five-column flotilla stretches 1,200 meters in length and 90 across. A total 2,311 sailors from various units within the Royal Thai Navy will serve as oarsmen.
