🌕🙏 One of Northern Thailand’s most important Lanna cultural and religious festivals, the Paet Peng Tradition of Worshiping Phra Chao Ton Luang, will return from May 22–31, 2026, at Wat Si Khom Kham.
Event Details:
Date: 22–31 May 2026
Location: Wat Si Khom Kham
Held in celebration of the 535th anniversary of Phra Chao Ton Luang, the festival invites devotees and visitors to experience the rich spiritual heritage and cultural traditions of the Lanna Kingdom. The revered Phra Chao Ton Luang is recognized as the largest and oldest bronze Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture in the Lanna region.
The term “Paet Peng” refers to the full moon day of the eighth northern lunar month according to the traditional Lanna calendar, coinciding with Visakha Bucha Day, one of Buddhism’s most sacred observances.
Throughout the 10-day celebration, visitors can participate in merit-making ceremonies, pay homage to the sacred Buddha image, and join the ritual bathing ceremony for blessings and good fortune.
The event also features vibrant cultural activities, including local product fairs, exhibitions of traditional wisdom, and grand processions representing all nine districts of Phayao Province. One of the festival’s most anticipated moments is the ceremonial invitation of Phra Upakhut from the waters of Kwan Phayao, symbolizing spiritual protection and prosperity.
Additional highlights include elaborate parades, cultural performances, concerts by well-known Thai artists, and a spectacular light and sound show titled “The Legend of Phra Chao Ton Luang,” showcasing the history and faith of the region.
The annual festival continues to serve as a major spiritual and tourism event for Phayao, drawing visitors seeking cultural immersion, religious devotion, and traditional Lanna experiences.
