Nan International Folk Culture Festival 2017

July 1, 2017

Venue: Wat Phumin, Nan Province

The first International Folk Culture Festival 2017 will take place on 1 July, 2017 at Wat Phumin, in the northern Thai province of Nan.

Thanks to its Lanna heritage, Nan is culturally-rich as well as being home to many tribal peoples. This is why the area was chosen to stage the first-ever International Folk Culture Festival 2017.

The event aims to present some of the many ways that Nan culture is interlinked with that of its neighbours in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. So the highlights will be cultural performances from China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Lao as well as Thailand.

The Nan provincial authority is planning to showcase the special ‘Pooja’ drum which is unique to the local Nan people. Other activities include cultural exhibitions, booths selling local products, seminars and lectures on Nan’s cultural heritage, knowledge exchanges about the culture, art and crafts of Nan and neighbouring countries.

The organisers hope this event will help to build bridges and cultural understanding between different parts of ASEAN and so establish networks for further tourism development and cooperation. It is also hoped that the event will act as a platform for knowledge and cultural exchange.
