Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival 2018

In Chiang Mai, the Yi Peng Festival 2018 takes place on 20-23 November, celebrating traditions and activities that are unique to the Lanna people.

The main venue is at Tha Phae Gate (Khung Pratu Tha Phae) with some celerabtions and activities scheduled at the Monument of the Three Kings and the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality.

The event’s activities include:

Daily activities include: “Tam Phang Patit Song Fa Haksa Mueang” (Light the Lanterns to Guard the City) at the Monument of the Three Kings, 18.00 – 23.00 Hrs.; the ‘Yi Peng Lantern Sculpture Show’ around city moats, gates, and corners, 19.00 – 22.00 Hrs.; and cultural performances at the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 19.00 – 22.00 Hrs.

Activities on 21 November include: the opening ceremony of “Yi Peng Festival 2018” at Tha Phae Gate, 18.00 Hrs.; and the ‘Yi Peng Little Boys and Girls Contest at the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 19.00 Hrs.

The ‘Mister and Miss (Thephi-Thepphabut) Yi Peng Contest’ takes place at Tha Phae Gate on 21-22 November, 19.00 – 23.00 Hrs.

Activities on 22 November include: the ‘ceremony to worship the Spirit House, and Chedi Khao, and ask the Goddess of Water for her forgiveness’ at Mae Ping River, in front of the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 08.09 – 10.30 Hrs.; the ‘banana-leaf and fresh-flower Krathong contest’ at the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 09.00 – 15.00 Hrs.; and the ‘release of Lanna-style Krathong Sai’ at Mae Ping River, in front of the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 19.00 Hrs. and 22.00 Hrs.

Activities on 23 November include: the ‘Giant Krathong Cup Parade Contest’ from Tha Phae Gate to the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 19.00- 23.00 Hrs.; and the ‘Fireworks Display’ at Mae Ping River, in front of the Office of Chiang Mai City Municipality, 19.30 Hrs. and 21.30 Hrs.
