Originally a fishing village, Ao Nang is now a major city beach resort and a travel destination in its own right catering for the full range of foreign tourists. Ao Nang’s chief feature is a long white sand beach set against crystal clear water, but people also come here for a full range of activities such as diving, kayaking and trekking.
Ao Nang is located approximately 6 kilometers from Noppharat Thara Beach and 20 kilometers from Krabi town. Ao Nang is a large bay with scenic beaches and 83 small islands. The attractions in Ao Nang area includes Railay Beach, Pra Nang Beach, Pra Nang Cave, Sa Pra Nang, Poda Island and Thap Island.
A boat from Ao Nang Village can be hired for sightseeing excursions around Ao Nang, Pra Nang Beach and Hat Nam Mao, all of which are only accessible by foot. Other offshore isles such as Ko Poda, Ko Kai, Ko Mo and Ko Thap, are popular destinations that can be reached by a rented boat from Ao Nang. An abundance of colorful coral reefs and lovely cartoon fishes make these islands ideal for diving and snorkeling.
Popular activities include sightseeing by canoe along the beachfront and paddling tours by inflatable canoes or kayaks of the coast and its mangrove forests, islands and semi-submerged caves. Ao Nang has numerous agencies to arrange trips to attractions and activities available in the vicinity. Bird watching is a favorite activity in the area, as are jungle treks and boats to neighboring islands.
Diving is another popular draw and again agencies in the area arrange dives for all levels. They also offer liveaboard trips that take in the local islands. Day trips are relatively inexpensive, but ask around for the most reliable places and shop around for the best deals.
