This time of year is great for film lovers in Thailand! Right on the heels of the Bangkok Film Festival, the World Film Festival of Bangkok (WFF) is upon us. Starting October 24, 2008, and going on until November 1, 2008, WFF is showing more than 60 movies, all screened at the Paragon Cineplex in central Bangkok.
The objective of this year’s event is to introduce quality, non-mainstream films from all over the world, and to showcase independent films and new work of both “rising talents” and “cinema masters”. The result is an exciting eclectic blend of films from countries all corner of the globe, including Thailand, Singapore, Switzerland, Malaysia, Israel, India, USA, France, Netherlands, UK, Spain, Argentina, and a number of other countries.
As with every great festival, the event offers more than just films. This year there is a range of film-related activities including talks, Master Class Workshops, and a workshop to guide film producers seeking funds for their new projects. The most interesting film projects in Southeast Asia will be selected to receive funds.
Another feature of WFF is a ‘Poster Exhibition’. 20 outstanding posters from the WFF 2008 Poster Competition will be displayed at Infinity Hall, Paragon Cineplex (5th floor). There is also a ‘Celebrity Look Alike’ competition for people who believe they closely resemble famous stars, and a ‘Short Films Competition’, in which the ten best short films will be shown. Once of the key features of the event is a retrospective of British director Derek Jarman’s work. WFF will show three of his masterpieces (‘Caravaggio’, ‘Jubilee’, and ‘The Angelic Conversation’) alongside 'Derek', a documentary written and produced in 2007 by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton.
The sixth year the event has run, and its is now firmly on the international calendar attracting in excess of 20,000 people directors, film stars, and global industry players. If you are in Bangkok during the period, and you have a passion for films, you are in luck. With ticket prices of less than 200 Baht, this is an opportunity you really can’t afford to miss.
