Pak Thong Chai Silk Village in Nakhon Ratchasima

Pak Thong Chai Silk Village
Nakhon Ratchasima

Despite this age of high technology and automation, it is a little known fact that the bulk of silk produced in Thailand is spun by hand in silk villages using traditional techniques. Pak Thong Chai is one such village entirely dedicated to the production of fine silks and silk products. The quality of its products has given Pak Thong Chai particular renown both in Thailand and on the international stage. Every stage of the silk process is carried out here; from spinning and drying to the final production of silk goods. It is possible eat traditional food from this region ('Issan') with the local silk weavers and the few street stalls dotted around the area. This is a great place to see some a traditional way of life and a great place to pick up gifts for people back home. Although you are dealing directly with the producers, prices are not necessarily cheaper than some of the major cities where people buy in bulk and pass on reductions to customers. It is though a great place to visit.

How to get there: Pak Thong Chai is located 30 kilometers south of Khorat. To get there you can catch a bus from Khorat bus station; the fare is about 15 Baht. Songtaews also leave Khorat bus station for the area.
