Wat Ratchabophit in Bangkok

Wat Ratchabophit

Wat Ratchabophit was built by King Rama V in 1869 and displays a variety of western and local influences - the outside of the temple is very much Thai while the interior is more reminiscent of European design. The temple has a large Chedi housing a 'Lopburi-style' Buddha image. The doors, windows and internal beams are decorated with gold leaf and small mirrors. Many of the buildings within the temple have a Gothic feel. This is yet another beautiful temple that is worthy of a visit if your time in Bangkok permits.

Details: The temple opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00 and admission is free.

How to get there: Probably the best way of getting to Wat Ratchabophit is Express Boat - the temple is a short distance from Tha Thien pier, just past Wat Pho and Saranrom Park. A taxi from central Bangkok will cost around 80-90 Baht.

The following buses will get you to the areas around Wat Pho:

Bus Number: 1, 25, 44, 47, 62, 44, 47 and 91 all stop close to the temple

Air-conditioned Bus Number: 6, 8 and 12

Tel: 0-2222-3930, 0-2221-0904

The temple is a mixture of local and western styles, showing an awakening interest in new ideas and a desire to experiment with them. The exterior of the chapel is in the Thai style, but the interior is decorated in the European style. Open: Daily from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: Free Tel: 0-2222-3930, 0-2221-0904
