Bangkok Planetarium in Bangkok

Bangkok Planetarium

More formerly the 'National Science Centre for Education', Bangkok Planetarium offers an educational and entertaining day out that won't break the bank. While it obviously focuses on space as a theme, the planetarium aims to educate youngsters in a number of areas.

Located in central Bangkok, and easily accessible by public transport, the planetarium was established in 1964, but renovations and projector upgrades completed in 2015 mean it is a modern venue with excellent facilities. 20 meters (70 feet) across and 13 meters (45 feet) high, this is a big planetarium that seats 450 people.

Bangkok Planetarium offers demonstrations, exhibitions and interactive installations on subjects as diverse as dinosaurs, insects, aspects of advanced technology, underwater life, the aurora, and Thailand's oil production. It also has a sizeable aquarium. Its main attraction is probably "Exploring New Horizons" which follows the 'New Horizons' spacecraft on its mission to Pluto. There is also a room on the second floor where very young children can paint cartoons and cartoon-character figures.

Unfortunately for foreign visitors, there is only one English language show per week which takes place Tuesday mornings. In addition, the bulk of the displays are in the Thai language, with roughly only one third offering English descriptions. Despite this, the planetarium and its exhibits are accessible for people who do not speak Thai.

If you want to build a visit to Bangkok Planetarium into a day's shopping its central location means it is easily accessible by public transport and close to key department stores. It is a short distance from the Emporium and a short BTS Skytrain ride to Siam Paragon, both leading Bangkok department stores.

Opening times: Bangkok Planetarium opens daily 08.30 to 16.30 (except Mondays and bank holidays)

Entrance fees: 40 Baht ($1.10) for adults and 20 Baht ($0.56) for children

Notes: Planetarium shows are in Thai with English language shows on Tuesday mornings at 10:00.
