12 August 2005 is a public holiday in Thailand marking the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Expect to see decorations everywhere and plenty of events to celebrate the Royal occasion. Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Banglampoo (the part of Bangkok where you can find the Grand Palace, Wat Prakaew and tourist venues like Khao San |
Road) has a particularly spectacular display with coloured lights and masses of bunting – particularly impressive in the evening. Many foreigners do not fully appreciate the reverence paid to Thai royalty, but if you are in Thailand around the Queen’s birthday, you cannot fail to appreciate the genuine love, respect and appreciation the Thais have for their sovereigns. To make the day even more special, 12 August is Mother’s Day in Thailand, a day for appreciation of the most important person in anyone’s life.
