| A man-made island may be in the pipeline for Phuket, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani suggested this week.
The island would be built off the coast of Phuket and designed to provide mooring for yachts. The objective of the new island would be to promote Thailand and have a positive impact on tourism by catering to the world’s billionaire club. Details for the island are yet to be approved and a full investigation into the project would be required before commencement.
Reports suggest the project may have been inspired by Bill Gates and his wife. Bill and Melinda Gates purportedly visited Phuket recently and suggested they would be happy to return every year if they had access to private dock facilities.
The governor of Phuket, Mr. Niran Kallayanamitr has suggested he would be happy to discuss the development of the island with Mr. Gates and would also be happy to examine the possibility of him investing in the project.
