The Bangkok capital has numerous temples, many with extremely high historical and cultural significance. Bangkok is of course home to Wat Pra Keaw (in the Grand Palace), home to the Emerald Buddha – Thailand’s most revered religious artefact. It is though home to several temples whose images have become iconic representing both capital and country. Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and Wat Traimit (home to a 5 ton solid gold Buddha image) are amongst Bangkok’s more important temples. Although many of the most important temples are firmly on the tourist route, there are countless temples in the capital that although might not have the same importance, are extremely enjoyable places to visit. It is at these temples that a sense of the communities that revolve around temples can be experienced and where there is much more likelihood of you encountering and speaking to locals who are outside the travel industry. If you are in Bangkok for any length of time, a visit to its temples, whether well known or not, will be a rich and rewarding experience.
