Bangkok has a number of important monuments and shrines to visit... Some are high profile landmarks – Victory Monument and Democracy Monument are extremely familiar places to those who travel around the metropolis on a regular basis. Their significance does though go beyond just being landmarks; Victory Monument has an ongoing role in events such as visits from foreign dignitaries and Democracy Monument has born witness to many of the darker events in Thailand’s modern history. A number of similar (if less prominent) monuments that are also worth a visit can be found around the capital. Like elsewhere in the country, Bangkok’s monuments and shrines can also represent figures from Thailand’s prehistory, mythology and religious figures. Visitors to Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine, for example, pay homage to Brahma, a mythical four headed god. The shrine is a daily round of non-stop dancing and music for all to enjoy. As you will find out, Bangkok’s monuments and shrines give a visitor an insight into the country’s history and culture you wouldn’t get without visiting them. You should therefore visit at least one when you are in town.
