Phraram Ratchaniwet in Phetchaburi

Phraram Ratchaniwet
Phetchaburi

Built by King Chulachomklao (Rama V), Phraram Ratchaniwet is a royal palace comprising a collection of golden teak buildings joined by a series of elevated walkways. The buildings are European in design and the palace was originally used to accommodate officials on state visits. It underwent a number of transformations along the way and has previously taken roles as diverse as Boy Scout School and Agricultural Teacher Training College. In 1986 the site was renovated and restored to its former glory. It is a great place to wander around if you have the time, but might be further down a list of priorities on a shorter visit to Thailand.

Details: The Royal Thai Army is officially the keeper of the site (it is housed in a military camp) and officially a letter requesting a visit should be submitted beforehand to the Commander of Military District. However, in reality, a visit requires you to speak to the soldiers guarding the site and permission for a tour will be granted. Admission is 50 Baht and the site is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30.

How to get there: Phraram Ratchaniwet is 9 kilometers south of Cha-am and easily available by Songthaew from Cha-am bus station.
